Treat that special person to a trip they’ll never forget for a perfect wedding. All around Europe there are some very fine cities that fit the romantic bill – all not too far away – but here we have put together just a few of our favourites. There are the obvious choices that have been long established as romantic, but there are always the more secret spots to seek out, and of course flying private means the romance can begin right as you leave.
One such city is Paris, and no romantic city list would be complete without it. Here there is no shortage of idyllic hotel options from the grand and ornate, to the more whimsical. Paris is made for walking, cross the Seine and take in the view, browse bookshops like the famous Shakespeare & Co. or the close by Abbey Bookshop. Of course, food in this gastronomic capital is a crowning glory to Valentine’s Day in Paris. Get a table at Le Grand Véfour, Paris’s first grand restaurant dating back to 1784, or indulge in macaroons as you stroll, bought from Pierre Hermé on rue Bonaparte.
Another classic European getaway perfect for a romantic trip is Venice. Head to St Mark’s Square very early and experience its beauty without the masses, sip a cappuccino before making your way on a quick Vaporetto to the bell tower on the island of San Giorgio for some breathtaking views. Through the day browse Rialto market and find quieter corners in the maze of medieval alleys and canals, and in the evening head to Musica a Palazzo to experience a different take on opera.
For something a little off the beaten track, though it certainly enjoys a good tourist trade, try Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana. Here take in Congress Square with its beautiful gothic buildings, and cross the river Ljubljanica’s three bridges, especially Mesarski Most – or butchers’ bridge – where you can add your own “love padlock”. Eat at Špajza and if you have the time venture out of the city to wander through some of the most magical forests, in Europe’s third most forested country.
